The Rosin Box

After the performance, on the last day of school, she leads us downstairs to the rehearsal hall. As her mother snaps pictures I notice the old box on the floor. Sarah tells me it's dusted with rosin for dipping the toes of their point shoes. One evening, weeks later, we drive the back roads to Pearl Lake to look for nesting Bald Eagles. Its already cool when we find the boat landing and the canoe glides through lilies and black pine shadows, as we make for the still sunny side of the lake. I paddle and she casts to the reeds. Body memory allows the change up: dance floor to pothole, pirouette to back cast. She catches a hand size sunfish that we marvel at then send on its way. The eagles don't appear but the moon does and a flock of Bank Swallows spiral by as she plops ripples between the inverted orange clouds. The parting rushes graze the skin of her back on our way in and I wonder will this help describe some small, perfect arc on some other night after she steps out of the rosin box. -Glenn Wolff 2002
